How to Sell an Inherited Car in Florida
Inheriting a car doesn’t mean you have to keep it. We make selling it simple, from the title to the payment.
You Inherited a Car. Now What?
Maybe you already have a car, live in another state or don’t want the cost of insuring and storing another one. Selling an inherited car is a practical choice, and it turns a vehicle that would sit unused into money for you or the estate.
HoHo Buys Cars comes to wherever the car is parked, makes a clear written offer and helps with the title paperwork, so you don’t have to list it online or meet strangers for test drives.
Step 1: Get the Title in Order
Who signs depends on whose name is on the title right now.
If the title is still in the name of the person who passed away, it has to be handled through the estate. That is usually done by the personal representative, or by the heirs when Florida allows the car to pass without probate.
If the title has already been transferred into your name, you can sell it like any other car you own.
Our guide on how to sell a deceased person's car covers the estate side in more detail.
Step 2: Check for a Loan
A loan doesn’t stop the sale.
If there is still a balance, the lender keeps a lien on the title until it is paid. Tell us who holds the loan and we can pay it off as part of the purchase.
Step 3: Decide What You Want to Do
Keep it, give it to family or sell it.
Some families keep a car for sentimental reasons or pass it to a relative who needs one. When nobody needs it, selling saves you paying for insurance, registration and storage on a car that just sits. People usually sell an inherited car because:
- They already have a car of their own
- They live out of state
- The car would sit unused and lose value
- The estate needs to be divided between several heirs
Step 4: Get a Free Appraisal
We come to you and make an offer on the spot.
Tell us about the car, pick a time and we will meet you wherever it is. The appraisal takes about 10 minutes. If you accept the offer, we handle the paperwork and pay you on the spot.
What to Have Ready
A few documents make the sale quick.
- The title, or proof that you have the authority to sign it
- A copy of the death certificate, if the title is still in the deceased owner's name
- Letters of Administration, if the estate is in probate
- A photo ID for the person signing
- Loan details, if the car is financed
- All keys
How It Works
Selling the car takes three simple steps.
- Submit Your Vehicle Information
- Schedule Your Free Appraisal
- Receive Instant Cash Payment
Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to the questions families ask us most.
Can I sell an inherited car before probate is finished?
Sometimes. The person signing needs legal authority over the car. If the estate is in probate, that is the personal representative. If Florida lets the car pass without probate, the heirs may be able to sign. The estate's attorney or the tax collector's office can confirm it.
Several of us inherited the car together. Who signs?
Everyone with an ownership interest signs, or the personal representative signs on behalf of the estate. We can explain what the paperwork should look like before we meet.
I live out of state. Can you still buy it?
Yes. We coordinate with whoever has access to the car locally and keep you updated.
Can you buy the car if there is still a loan on it?
Yes. Tell us who holds the loan when you call. We can pay off the lender as part of the purchase and handle that paperwork, and if our offer is higher than the payoff, the difference goes to the seller.
What happens to the license plate after the sale?
In Florida the plate belongs to the owner, not the car. Remove it after the sale and either transfer it to another vehicle or turn it in at the county tax collector's office. Do that before you cancel the insurance, because canceling coverage on an active plate can lead to a suspension.
Does the appraisal cost anything?
No. The appraisal is free, it takes about 10 minutes, and there is no pressure to sell.
This page is general information about selling a vehicle in Florida, not legal advice. For questions about probate, guardianship or who has authority to sign, talk with the estate's attorney or your county tax collector's office.
