Nobody Told Me What to Expect Either
The first time I ever got a vehicle appraised, I had no idea what was actually going to happen. Would they take it apart? Would there be some mysterious formula? Would they lowball me and hope I did not know better?
That experience shaped how I think about appraisals at HoHo Buys Cars. I want sellers in Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch to come in knowing exactly what the process looks like. No mystery, no surprises.
So let me walk you through it.
It Starts Before I Even Look at the Car
Before the physical inspection, I ask a few basic questions. Year, make, model, trim level, and approximate mileage. These help me come in with reasonable expectations rather than going in blind.
If you have your VIN handy, even better. I use it to pull a vehicle history report through a tool like Carfax, which gives me a look at accident records, title history, service records, and previous ownership. This is standard practice for any serious buyer, and I think transparency here benefits everyone. If there is something in the history that affects value, I would rather we both see it at the same time.
This step takes a few minutes and sets the stage for a fair conversation.
The In-Person Inspection: What I Actually Look At
This is the core of the free car appraisal. I do this in person because a photo cannot tell me what I need to know.
Here is what I am looking at during a typical inspection.
Exterior condition. Panel gaps, paint condition, any signs of prior body work or rust. I am not trying to catch you in anything. I am just building an accurate picture of what the car is worth on the current market. Dents, scratches, and dings all factor in, and I will note them honestly.
Interior condition. Seat wear, headliner, dashboard, any odors. A well-maintained interior adds real value. A worn or damaged one affects the offer. Simple as that.
Mechanical condition. I check for anything obvious: warning lights on the dash, unusual sounds, fluid condition, tire wear. I am not a mechanic doing a full diagnostic, but I know what to look for.
Mileage verification. Odometer reading gets confirmed against what you told me. No surprises on either side.
The whole inspection takes 10 minutes or less. I keep it efficient because I know your time matters.
The Offer
After the inspection, I make you an offer. Same day. I do not need to “check with someone” or “call you back tomorrow.”
The offer is based on real factors: the car’s condition, current local market demand, the vehicle history, mileage, and trim level. I look at what similar vehicles are actually selling for right now in the Sarasota area, not just what the national guides say.
According to Edmunds, vehicle values can shift meaningfully based on local supply and demand, seasonal factors, and trim specifications. I factor that in. A base trim and a fully loaded version of the same model year are not worth the same thing, and I think sellers deserve to know that.
If my offer works for you, we move forward. If it does not, there is no pressure and no hard feelings. I would rather you feel good about the deal than regret it later.
Trucks, Vans, and SUVs Too
Quick note for anyone wondering: I do not only buy sedans. I buy trucks, vans, and SUVs across a wide range of makes and models. If you are sitting on a work truck, a family van, or anything in between, reach out. The appraisal process is the same.
I also work with sellers who still owe money on their vehicle. A loan on the car does not disqualify you from getting an offer. You can read more about how that works in my post on how to sell a car with a loan.
