Most People Think a Loan Means They Cannot Sell
I want to clear this up right away, because it comes up in almost every third conversation I have with sellers.
Owing money on your car does not mean you are stuck with it. You can absolutely sell a car that still has a loan on it. The process is a little different, but it is not complicated once you understand what is actually happening.
I am Howard at HoHo Buys Cars, and I buy cars directly from private sellers in Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch. I have worked through the loan payoff process with plenty of sellers, and I want to walk you through how it works so you go in with clear eyes.
The Basic Idea: Paying Off the Lender First
When you financed a vehicle, your lender, whether that is a bank, credit union, or finance company, holds a lien on the title. That means they have a legal claim on the car until the loan is paid off. You cannot transfer a clean title to a new buyer until that lien is cleared.
So the sequence goes like this: the payoff amount goes to your lender, and if the sale price exceeds what you owe, you pocket the difference. If you owe more than the car is worth, that is called being “upside down,” and we will talk about that in a moment.
According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, lien releases are standard practice, and most lenders process them quickly once they receive the payoff funds. It is a routine transaction for them.
When the Sale Price Covers the Loan
This is the easiest scenario, and honestly the most common one I see.
Let’s say you owe $8,000 on your truck and I offer you $12,000 for it. We pay off the $8,000 directly to your lender as part of the transaction, and you receive the remaining $4,000. Clean, done, title transfers with no lien attached.
The key step is getting your exact payoff amount before we close the deal. That number can be slightly different from your current balance because of how interest accrues daily. Call your lender or log into your account online to get the official 10-day payoff quote. That is the number that matters.
When You Owe More Than the Car Is Worth
This one requires a little more planning, but it is not a dead end.
If your payoff is $15,000 and I can only offer $11,000 based on the car’s condition and market value, there is a $4,000 gap. You would need to cover that difference to clear the lien and complete the sale. Some sellers use savings, others roll it into a new loan if they are buying another vehicle.
I will always be upfront with you about where the numbers land. If a deal does not make sense for you, I would rather tell you that than push you into something that leaves you worse off. That is just how I do business.
What I Need From You to Get Started
If you have a loan on your vehicle and you want to sell, here is what helps move things along quickly.
Know your lender’s name and have your account number handy. Get your payoff quote in writing, even a screenshot from your bank’s app works. And have your vehicle’s VIN ready. The VIN lets me pull a Carfax vehicle history report so I can see the full picture before I make an offer. Transparency on both sides makes for a smoother deal.
You will also want your photo ID and any title paperwork you have, even if the title is being held by your lender. That is normal.
The Appraisal Process Does Not Change
Here is something people sometimes assume: that having a loan makes the appraisal more complicated or that I factor it against you somehow. That is not how it works.
I assess the car the same way regardless of financing status. Mileage, condition, trim level, accident history, current market. Your loan balance is a separate financial conversation. It does not change what the vehicle is worth.
I do a thorough in-person inspection because I think that is the right way to make a fair offer. No guessing based on a photo. Schedule a free appraisal and I will come take a real look.
